Nuclear and Infranuclear Ocular Motility Disorders

Abstract
Impairment of eye movements may be divided into infranuclear, nuclear, and supranuclear disorders. Diseases of the eye muscles or ocular motor cranial nerves (oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, and abducens nerve) are considered infranuclear. Nuclear disorders are caused by disease of the oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nuclei in the brainstem. The correct etiological diagnosis of any infranuclear disturbance of ocular motility cannot be established without careful evaluation of all functions of the ocular muscles. Here we discuss anatomical and etiological evaluation of the nuclear and infranuclear ocular motility disorders.
